Consumption of medical cannabis through smoking has always been a topic of discussion in the states with MMJ programs in place. Nearly every state with MMJ legislation prohibits the administration of the strain through smoking.
However, MMJ advocates are now striving to allow the conditional smoking of MMJ strains. In a latest such development, a county circuit in Florida has given a verdict on the lawsuit filed by an against the state’s ban on the smoking of MMJ strains. Morgan played a key role in the movement for the legalization of medical cannabis in Florida. People United for Medical Marijuana, an advocacy group, was also a plaintiff in the case.
Morgan actually challenged the state’s last year amendment to the MMJ legislation that rendered the smoking of cannabis for therapeutic reasons illegal. Morgan’s petition maintains that’s the language of the legislation only bars public consumption of MMJ through smoking. Therefore, MMJ patients in the state must be allowed to privately consume their medicines by smoking it.
It is important to note that the state allowed the use of cannabis for medical reasons in 2016 in the form of oils, tinctures, and vapers. At that time, the legislation didn’t say anything about the smoking. However, with the reports of patients consuming MMJ by puffing blunts, some lawmakers came into action to ban it.
However, the local court has ruled the decision in favor of MMJ patients who want to consume cannabis through smoking by declaring the ban unconstitutional. Many valid points can be furnished for the permission of MMJ smoking.
It’s an Inexpensive Way to Consume MMJ
MMJ concentrates in the form of sprays and oils are expensive products as compared to raw flowers. There are many citizens who can’t afford to purchase pricey MMJ products to treat their debilitating medical conditions. It should also be remembered that MMJ is not covered by most of the health insurance programs.
In these circumstances, smoking provides an affordable mean to the patients for the consumption of medical cannabis.
It’ Sheer Hypocrisy of Lawmakers
While everyone can smoke tobacco products everywhere without any apprehension, but MMJ patients can’t even smoke it up in private spaces. It is important to note that the tar value of regular tobacco products is significantly higher than of marijuana joints. Tar is that dangerous byproduct of a lit up cigarette that contains different carcinogens causing mouth and lung cancer.
Allowing the pervasive consumption of cigarettes, even after knowing its dangerous consequences and disallowing MMJ patients to smoke cannabis flowers for some valid reasons, is just sheer hypocrisy on the part of all the respective decision-makers.
It’s Against Public Will
The inception of MMJ program in Florida was made possible through a public ballot. However, the amendment to ban smoking was put into effect without taking any public feedback into account. Therefore, cannabis advocates suggest that a public ballot should be conducted on the issue of MMJ smoking.
